Ringmere vs BT Business AI Receptionist: an honest comparison

BT Business now sells an AI receptionist to UK small businesses, backed by a national advertising campaign. It is sold in minute bundles with no price on the page. Ringmere publishes three flat plans from £49 and books appointments on every one. We make Ringmere, and here is the honest comparison, including when BT is the better buy.

First, the disclosure: we make Ringmere, so read this knowing who wrote it. Second, the respect: BT Business is the biggest name in UK business telecoms, and putting an AI receptionist in front of its customers will do more to make the category normal than any small vendor could. This comparison is about which tool fits which job.

What each one is

BT Business AI Receptionist launched on 1 October 2026 as the first product in “AI from BT”. It answers calls 24/7 or in business hours only, handles several calls at once, answers common questions from your website, FAQs or uploaded documents, captures enquiries and leads, schedules appointments with confirmations into Outlook or Google Calendar, transcribes calls, and routes a caller to a person when needed. It is sold in bundles of 100 minutes a month on a monthly rolling contract, set up through a self-service portal. Its product page is titled “AI Receptionist from RingCentral”.

Ringmere is a UK AI receptionist built for businesses that run on bookings. It learns your business from your website or an uploaded price list, PDF or spreadsheet, with you approving every answer, then answers your calls 24/7, checks live availability and books the appointment during the call, replies on WhatsApp and text on Growth and Pro, and puts urgent calls through to your team. Setup is self-serve and most businesses are live the same day.

Bundles or plans: what happens in a busy month

The two models differ most when the phone is busier than you planned. A BT bundle is a ceiling: at 100% the receptionist stops answering unless you have bought more minutes or switched on overage, which BT keeps off by default. That is a sensible guard against surprise bills, and it is also exactly the moment a growing business cannot afford voicemail. Ringmere treats the allowance as a floor: the line keeps answering at £0.25 a minute, and the ceiling is a monthly spend limit you set yourself. Before you compare prices, which you cannot do fully until BT quotes you, decide which failure you would rather have in a busy week: a bill a little higher than usual, or calls that go unanswered.

When BT is the right choice

  • You already buy phones and broadband from BT Business and want one supplier and one bill
  • You want a paid, scheduled onboarding session rather than setting it up yourself
  • You want a hard cap on minutes with no possibility of overage by default
  • You want the brand your customers already know behind the service

When Ringmere makes more sense

  • You want to see the price before you talk to anyone, and try it for 7 days before you commit
  • Your diary is in Google Calendar or Outlook and you want the slot confirmed on the call, with no double-booking, on the entry plan
  • You want the same receptionist to answer WhatsApp and text messages as well as the phone
  • You run a restaurant, takeaway or hotel: Ringmere takes orders, table reservations and room bookings
  • You run a clinic or practice: Ringmere takes a brief reason for the visit, never gives clinical advice, and escalates anything urgent to your team
  • You would rather the line kept answering in a busy month, under a spend ceiling you control

The honest bottom line

A national telecoms company’s add-on and a purpose-built booking receptionist are different tools, and BT’s arrival is good for every business that has been told an AI receptionist is a gimmick. Hear both before you choose: book BT’s demo, ring our own receptionist on 07888 870150, and put Ringmere on your line free for 7 days → (cancel anytime). Frequently asked questions

How much does BT Business AI Receptionist cost?
BT does not publish the price on its product page as read on 15 October 2026. It says the service is sold in bundles of 100 minutes a month, from 100 up to 14,000 minutes, on a monthly rolling contract, with an optional one-hour onboarding session at £150. Its launch offer is 50% off the 100 and 300-minute bundles for six months, for orders between 2 October and 20 November 2026. Ringmere publishes £49 a month for 150 call minutes, £99 for 240 and £249 for 700, excluding VAT.
Does BT Business AI Receptionist book appointments?
Yes. BT says it schedules appointments, sends confirmations and integrates with Outlook and Google Calendar. Ringmere books into Google Calendar, Outlook or its own built-in diary on every plan, and also takes takeaway orders, table reservations and hotel room bookings.
Do I need a BT phone line to use it?
BT says its AI Receptionist works across any UK fixed or mobile network and that you keep your existing number and phone system. The product page sits in BT’s Cloud Work range and is titled “AI Receptionist from RingCentral”, so confirm with BT what account you need. Ringmere also works with any number: forward the one you have, or take a free UK number on any plan.
What happens when the minutes run out?
On BT, overage is off by default. At 100% of your bundle the service turns off until you buy more minutes or switch overage on at a higher rate, with a spend cap you set, and the admin gets an email at 80% and 100%. On Ringmere the line keeps answering: extra minutes are £0.25 each (£0.20 on Pro) under a monthly spend ceiling you set yourself.
What is the best BT AI Receptionist alternative?
If you want a published price, bookings completed during the call on the entry plan, WhatsApp and text answered by the same receptionist, and customer records stored in the UK by a UK company, Ringmere is the natural alternative from £49 a month. If you want the product to come from BT, with BT’s support and a paid onboarding session, BT is a sensible choice. Both offer a way to hear it first: BT a demo, Ringmere a 7-day free trial.
