Method

Deliberately cautious, on purpose.

The calculator multiplies the calls you miss each week by the share who would have booked, then by your average booking value. It assumes only half of missed callers would have booked (industry research suggests most simply ring the next business), takes a month as 4.33 weeks, and never counts repeat visits, lifetime value or referrals. If the cautious number is still bigger than £49, the conclusion writes itself. And if your instinct says hire someone instead, read the honest AI receptionist vs in-house staff cost comparison first: a full-time hire is £30,000+ a year for 40 hours of cover a week.

Sector presets use the same published values as the UK Missed Call Report 2026 and the cost guides linked below, so what you read and what you calculate never disagree.

Questions

About the numbers.

How accurate is the missed call calculator?
It is deliberately conservative. It assumes only half of missed callers would have booked (or a third, if you choose), uses your own average booking value, and counts a month as 4.33 weeks. Most businesses that then measure reality find the true number is higher, because the calls they miss cluster at their busiest, highest-intent times.
Where do the preset numbers come from?
The sector presets use the same published values as the Ringmere UK Missed Call Report 2026 and our cost-of-missed-calls guides: average booking values from public price benchmarks and call volumes from industry research. Every preset can be overridden with your own numbers.
What counts as a missed call?
Any call that rings out, hits voicemail, or arrives outside opening hours. Research long attributed to BT puts the typical miss rate for UK small businesses at roughly one call in five, and most callers who reach voicemail do not leave a message or call back.
How do I stop missing calls?
First find when your calls go unanswered, then route those calls somewhere that completes the booking rather than taking a message. Our guide on how to stop missing calls covers the free fixes first; an AI receptionist from £49 a month is the always-on version.
