Missed call statistics for UK businesses, 2026.
How many business calls go unanswered, what each one is worth, and the revenue lost by sector. Every figure sourced, modelled cautiously, and free to cite.
UK small businesses miss roughly one inbound call in five, and most callers who reach voicemail ring a competitor instead of leaving a message. Modelled conservatively, that puts between £1,500 and £9,000 a month of bookings at stake on a single phone line, depending on the sector: about £5,700 for a salon and over £9,000 for a garage.
This page is the quick-reference version of the UK Missed Call Report 2026, which shows the full workings. To run the same model on your own numbers, use the missed call cost calculator.

How many calls do UK businesses miss?
- Roughly one inbound call in five to a UK small business goes unanswered, according to long-cited BT Business research. Industry studies consistently report higher rates at peak times.
- Most callers who reach voicemail do not leave a message. They ring the next business on the list, so the call is lost rather than delayed.
- Missed calls cluster at four predictable moments: mid-appointment, over lunch, in the last hour before close, and out of hours.
- The calls a business misses are worth more than average, not less: evening, weekend and new-customer calls arrive exactly when nobody can answer.
How big is the problem?
- The UK has about 5.5 million private sector businesses, and the overwhelming majority are micro-businesses with no dedicated receptionist (Business Population Estimates 2024).
- 42.5 million MOT tests a year keep garage phones ringing (DVSA annual report).
- There are more than 61,000 hair and beauty businesses in the UK (NHBF industry statistics).
What is one missed call worth?
- A salon booking averages £55, within a usual range of £40 to £120.
- A garage booking averages £150; a first episode at a private clinic about £180.
- A physiotherapy course is worth about £275, and a new dental patient about £250 in their first year.
- A typical plumbing call-out is about £110 (Checkatrade cost guide), and the boiler job behind it about £3,000, the widest value range of any sector we modelled.
- A barbershop visit is about £20, but a regular is worth £300 or more a year.
What does round-the-clock cover cost?
- A full-time front-desk hire often costs more than £30,000 a year all in, for roughly 40 hours of cover a week (AI receptionist vs in-house staff).
- An AI receptionist answers 24/7 from £49 a month, about £588 a year. What an AI receptionist costs in the UK compares the pricing models.

Method. Official statistics set the scale, public price benchmarks set the booking values, and every sector uses the same deliberately cautious rule: assume only half of missed callers would have booked (a third where enquiries are consultation-led), take the low end of each price range, and count a month as 4.33 weeks. We deliberately do not publish a single national headline figure, because it would be built on assumptions stacked three deep.
